Correlation of discocyte frequency and ATP concentration in preserved blood: A morphological indicator of red blood cell viability BJMBR
Red blood cells (RBC) are viable if kept in an adequate preservative solution, although gradual changes in morphology and metabolism may occur. There is a gradual decrease in adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) concentration, pH, glucose consumption, and enzyme activity during preservation. The normal discocyte shapes are initially replaced by echinocytes and stomatocytes and, at final stages, by spherocytes, the last step before splenic sequestration. Post-transfusional survival has been correlated with the ATP concentration. RBC preserved in ADSOL, a solution containing adenine, dextrose, sodium chloride, and mannitol, are viable for transfusion for up to 6 weeks. Erythrocytes from 10 blood units taken from healthy adult donors were preserved for 12 weeks in...

Human neutrophil alloantigens systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
Moritz,Elyse; Norcia,Ângela M. M. I.; Cardone,José D. B.; Kuwano,Sachie T.; Chiba,Akemi K.; Yamamoto,Mihoko; Bordin,José O..
Neutrophil alloantigens are involved in a variety of clinical conditions including immune neutropenias, transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), refractoriness to granulocyte transfusions and febrile transfusion reactions. In the last decade, considerable progress has been made in the characterization of the implicated antigens. Currently, seven antigens are assigned to five human neutrophil antigen (HNA) systems. The HNA-1a, HNA-1b and HNA-1c antigens have been identified as polymorphic forms of the neutrophil Fcγ receptor IIIb (CD16b), encoded by three alleles. Recently, the primary structure of the HNA-2a antigen was elucidated and the HNA-2a-bearing glycoprotein was identified as a member of the Ly-6/uPAR superfamily, which has been clustered as...

Prevalence of DEA 1 canine blood group system in dogs (Canis familiaris, Linnaeus, 1758) reared in Brazil Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
NOVAIS,Adriana Alonso; SANTANA,Aureo Evangelista; VICENTIN,Luciene Aparecida.
Up to the present, the DEA 1 system has been regarded as the most important dog blood group as far as blood transfusion is concerned. It occurs because the DEA 1 system is highly antigenic and may elicit the production of alloantibodies in a DEA 1 negative recipient, following a transfusion with DEA 1 positive red cells. As a consequence, the recipient will develop a hemolytic transfusion reaction if it receives a second transfusion with DEA 1 type cells. The frequency of appearance of the DEA 1 system is well known in other countries but no information was available for dogs reared in Brazil. In the present experiment 150 dogs were typed, using specific reagents purchased from "The Immunohematology and Serology Laboratory" of Michigan State University, in...

Re-emergence of human T-lymphotropic viruses in West Africa BJID
Anyanwu,Nneoma Confidence JeanStephanie; Ella,Elijah Ekah; Ohwofasa,Aghogho; Aminu,Maryam.
ABSTRACT Human T-lymphotropic viruses (HTLV) are Deltaretroviruses that infect millions of individuals worldwide via the same transmission routes as HIV. With the aim of exposing the possible re-emergence of HTLV in West Africa since discovery, a systematic review was carried out, focusing on the distribution of the virus types and significance of frequent indeterminate reports, while highlighting the need for mandatory routine blood screening. Capturing relevant data from discovery till date, sources searched were Google Scholar, CrossRef, NCBI (PubMed), MEDLINE, Research Gate, Mendeley, abstracts of Conferences and Proceedings, organization websites and reference lists of selected papers. A total of 2626 references were initially retrieved using search...

Transfusion risk for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, 1991-2001 BJID
Kupek,Emil.
We examined the time trend of residual risk of transfusing blood contaminated with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, in the largest blood bank of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, 1991-2001. The HIV risk was reduced approximately 10 times during the decade of 1990, to 1:48777, but then increased significantly by the end of 2001. A similar time trend was observed for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, although the increase was not significant in this case. Even during the period of lowest risk, the estimates were considerably higher than in developed countries.

Western blot seroindeterminate individuals for Human T-lymphotropic Virus 1/2 (HTLV-1/2) in Fortaleza (Brazil): a serological and molecular diagnostic and epidemiological approach BJID
Santos,Terezinha de Jesus Teixeira; Costa,Carlos Maurício de Castro; Goubau,Patrick; Vandamme,Anne-Mieke; Desmyter,Jan; Van Dooren,Sonia; Mota,Rosa M. S.; Costa,Francine Bovy de Castro; Oliveira,Ana C. S.; Gomes,Vânia Barreto A.F.; Carneiro-Proietti,Anna B.; Bruin,Veralice Meireles Sales de; Sousa,Francisca C. F. de; Oriá,Reinaldo Barreto.
How to handle Western blot (WB) seroindeterminate individuals for Human T-lymphotropic Virus 1/2 (HTLV-1/2) constitutes a challenge for blood banks and fam ilies. We made a cross-sectional study of 191 enzyme linked immunoassay (EIA) reactive individuals from the hematological center (HEMOCE) of Fortaleza (Brazil), examining their serological (WB) and molecular (PCR) diagnosis, and demographic profiles, as well as a possible association of their condition with other infectious pathologies and risk factors. Ethical institutional approval and personal consent were obtained. Out of 191 EIA reactive individuals, 118 were WB seroindeterminate and 73 were seropositive for HTLV-1/2. In the PCR analysis of 41 WB seroindeterminate individuals, 9 (22%) were positive...

Whole blood transfusion in small animals: indications and effects Anais da ABC (AABC)
Godinho-Cunha,Luís F; Ferreira,Rui M. R. F; Silvestre-Ferreira,Ana C.
Transfusion therapy is a major resource that can improve the patient's capability to overcome the underlying disease. However, the effects of whole blood infusion, and how they affect the patient's outcome, are not yet clear. For this study, a protocol was developed in order to monitor a group of 15 animals (9 dogs, 6 cats) that received a total of 19 transfusions; 3 animals received more than one transfusion each. The most common indications for blood transfusion included acute blood loss (47%), coagulopathy (33%) and other anaemias (20%). The mean pre-transfusion packed cell volume (PCV) of animals with acute blood loss (18%) was higher than in the group of coagulopathy (15%) or other anaemias (15%). The survival rates at 6 days after transfusion were...
